As the May breeze blows through the land of maple leaves, Canada not only welcomes the warmth of spring, but also celebrates Asian Heritage Month. “Asian Heritage Month is a time to reflect on the contributions of Asian Canadians to Canadian society. During this special month, we not only celebrate their achievements, but also delve into their life experiences and how they have shaped their identity through culture.

According to the Government of British Columbia, people have been coming to the province from countries in Asia since the late 1700s. for more than 200 years, Asian Canadians have made remarkable contributions in a variety of fields, including the arts, sports, science, business, politics, and social justice. However, new Asian immigrants and those whose families have lived in Canada for generations have long faced hostility and hatred, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, when such sentiments skyrocketed.

在这充满挑战的背景下，五位居住在大温哥华地区的亚裔加拿大人分享了他们的生活经历，揭示了他们如何在不列颠哥伦比亚省的多元文化环境中找到自己的位置，并通过亚裔传统月与他们的文化遗产建立更深的联系。

Against this challenging backdrop, five Asian Canadians living in the Greater Vancouver area share their life experiences, revealing how they have found their place in British Columbia's multicultural environment and developed a deeper connection to their cultural heritage through Asian Heritage Month.

Loveena Chera

Loveena Chera came to Canada from India at the age of four. As the CEO of InspireHealth Cancer Supportive Care Center, she has not only had an extraordinary career, but has actively encouraged other women to take on leadership roles. During Asian Heritage Month, Chera shares with her children the challenges she and her loved ones faced as new immigrants in Canada, teaching them to be resilient. Heavily influenced by her mother, a former teacher in India who always inspired her to set and achieve high goals, Chera believes that Vancouver's diversity is what makes the city so appealing, and is the foundation of the city's uniqueness and unity. She states, “It is truly a time of gratitude, reflection and learning.”

Kevin Huang

Kevin Huang grew up in Vancouver and his identity was strengthened during a nine-month trip to Taiwan. In Taiwan, he reconnected with his family and ancestors and reaffirmed his identity.Huang is the co-founder and executive director of the Hua Foundation, a non-profit youth empowerment organization that strengthens Asian Canadian identity through food culture. He emphasizes that food is an important cultural link that helps Asian Canadians better understand and express their heritage. He said, “Traditionally, there has been a struggle to recognize the racialization of Asians.”

Amélie Nguyễn

在温哥华出生和长大的Amélie Nguyễn是屡获殊荣的越南餐馆Anh and Chi的联合创始人。Nguyễn认为，亚裔传统不应仅限于某个特定月份，而应每天在生活的各个方面得到体现。她通过与已故父亲的朋友和温哥华越南社区的联系，保持与自己文化的紧密联系，并积极与其他亚裔企业主合作，推动和保护亚裔遗产。Nguyễn说：“亚洲传统应该在一年中的每一天都得到承认，许多人已经通过烹饪、聚会和分享故事来这样做了。”

Born and raised in Vancouver, Amélie Nguyễn is the co-founder of the award-winning Vietnamese restaurant Anh and Chi.Nguyễn believes that Asian heritage should not be confined to a specific month, but should be reflected every day in all aspects of life. She maintains a strong connection to her culture through connections with her late father's friends and Vancouver's Vietnamese community, and actively works with other Asian business owners to promote and preserve Asian heritage.Nguyễn says, “Asian traditions should be recognized every day of the year, and many people are already doing so through cooking, gathering and sharing stories. “

Shahnaz Rahman

Shahnaz Rahman immigrated to Kitimat, B.C., from Pakistan 45 years ago. It was a difficult experience, she says, but her mother's acceptance as an older immigrant seemed easier.Rahman is now the executive director of the Surrey Women's Centre, where she is active in working against violence in the community and emphasizes the importance of reflecting on the contributions of Asian Canadians in British Columbia. After raising her two children in Kitimat, she moved to the Metro Vancouver area to thrive with people from different cultural backgrounds.Rahman says, “It would be a real denial if we didn't take a moment to reflect on the contributions and achievements of Asian Canadians in British Columbia.”

Mustaali Raj

来自印度的跨学科艺术家Mustaali Raj在卡尔加里和温哥华长大，他的作品反映了他复杂的文化身份。他认为，亚洲文化已经深深融入加拿大人的日常生活，尽管很多人可能没有意识到这一点。Raj通过艺术创造不同文化之间的对话，寻找共同点和联系点，展示了文化交汇对身份认同的影响。

Originally from India, interdisciplinary artist Mustaali Raj grew up in Calgary and Vancouver, and his work reflects his complex cultural identity. He believes that Asian culture is deeply embedded in the daily lives of Canadians, though many may not realize it, and Raj demonstrates the impact of cultural intersections on identity by creating dialogues between cultures through his art, searching for commonalities and points of connection.

He says, “There are a lot of things that are integrated into our daily lives that come from Asian heritage or culture that many of us don't reflect or notice.” He tries to reflect this in his work, creating a dialog between different cultures. He adds, “I have an Asian background and a Muslim background, and it's interesting to find common ground and intersections that different people can relate to.”

This Asian Heritage Month, let's not only celebrate the past, but also look to the future and continue to weave Canada's colorful multicultural tapestry of respect, understanding and acceptance.
